A police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing after implying he would cancel a female motorist's speeding fine if she did him a favour.

Stuff reports The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) cleared the officer this week  for the 2019 incident after the woman complained the text messages he sent her were inappropriate.

The officer said his texts were an attempt to promote road safety and the favour he asked of her was that she drive at a safe speed in future. He also suggested she could meet him for coffee in future.

"He believed she would understand these comments were intended to be humorous," a summary of the investigation stated.

It found he did not act unlawfully or inappropriately in cancelling her ticket, as he was entitled to provide road safety advice as an alternative to a fine, reports Stuff.

There was insufficient evidence to prove the officer had committed any criminal offence or breached their Code of Conduct.
