Road closed after tree crushes ute in Johnsonville, Wellington

A lucky Wellington motorist has escaped unscathed after a huge tree crashed down onto his ute.

A police spokesperson told Newshub the man was uninjured after strong winds brought the tree down on top of his vehicle on Monday morning.

The fallen tree is blocking a section of Middleton Rd in Johnsonville and it's expected to take some time to clear. The road is closed and police are on site helping to direct traffic away from the area.

Photos on social media show the black ute crushed beneath the branches of the tree, and its windscreen shattered.

Workers are on site clearing the debris but  the road is expected to remain closed while a tow truck is organised.

Wellington is under a strong wind watch, with northwest winds which could approach gale force on Monday and Tuesday.
