Roast Busters: Two men appear in court over underage sex allegations

As two men linked to the Roast Busters teen sex gang made their first appearance in court on Wednesday a member of the public yelled "shame".

It's seven years since New Zealanders marched in the streets against the country's rape culture, sparked by allegations a ring in west Auckland had been sexually assaulting drunk girls aged as young as 13.

Two 24-year-old men appeared at the Waitakere District Court on Wednesday, part of a trio police filed charges against last week.

The pair walked calmly into court ignoring a large media contingent as they faced a charge each of sexual connection with a young person aged 12-16.

One was represented by top criminal defense lawyer Ron Mansfield.

No plea was entered by either man and both were granted interim name suppression.

Police say a third accused overseas also faces charges and will be arrested if he returns to New Zealand.

The developments in the case come after a west Auckland woman went to police, reiterating a complaint she'd made as a 15-year-old. She's one of 110 teenage girls police spoke to in 2013, after a group known as the Roast Busters boasted on social media about allegedly having sex with drunk underage girls, who they named.

Five suspects were identified by police at the time, with a total of seven alleged victims from west Auckland, some as young as 13.

No charges were ever laid.

Both men have been remanded on bail until January 15, and have been ordered by the court to refrain from contacting their co-accused or their alleged victim.
