Seven people have been arrested in connection with a spate of drug deals and drive-by shootings across Hawke's Bay.

The warrants are part of an ongoing investigation into gangs possessing illegal guns, selling drugs and violently attacking people. As a result, 21 guns have been seized by police including a high powered assault rifle.

Police said a number of the guns they took were already loaded.

At one address, police seized ammunition, meth, cannabis and $26,000 in cash.

Five men and two women, aged between 37 and 58, were taken into custody, facing drug dealing, firearms and theft charges. Police say further charges are likely.

Detective Inspector Rob Jones says police are "committed" to targeting gangs in the area.

"We want to send a clear message that such criminal activity won't be tolerated. It causes immeasurable harm in our communities  harm that we are committed to reducing."

He says police will continue to target anyone involved in drug manufacturing and dealing, as the number of high-powered guns seized indicate "a willingness" to intimidate and use violence to do illicit things.

"Similarly, police will continue to have dialogue with gang and community leaders in an ongoing effort to prevent future violence."
