Most years, crowds around the world flock to see fireworks displays as part of their New Year's Eve celebrations.

But as we all know, 2020 is no normal year.

With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to rage around the globe and many countries facing renewed lockdowns, traditional New Year's Eve events all over the world have been panned in the name of public health and safety.

Thankfully, that isn't the case in New Zealand. As one of the few countries in the world able to enjoy life outdoors this New Year's Eve Kiwis have the luxury of being able to ring in the new year as they always have and pretend everything is completely normal.

Here's some of the displays taking place across the country.

Auckland

Auckland is set to see in the new year with a midnight fireworks show taking place over the city.

As well as the five-minute display, the Harbour Bridge will also be lit up to mark the new year.

Those hoping to nab themselves a top viewing spot are advised to head to the waterfront, Devonport, Herne Bay, Te Atatū Peninsula, Bastion Point, Northcote, Mt Eden, or Bayswater Marina.

Before the midnight fireworks, there will also be free entertainment from 2pm at Silo Park and from 5pm on Te Wero Island.

The Britomart Block Party NYE Festival will also be taking place on Galway Street and Britomart Square from 7pm – 4am.

Wellington

The capital is marking the occasion with a New Year's Eve event at Whairepo Lagoon, by Frank Kitts Park.

The whānau-friendly celebration features food, music and, of course, fireworks.

It kicks off at 8pm and includes an hour of music with Electric Avenue until the kids' countdown at 9pm. Orchestra Wellington will then provide entertainment from 10pm until midnight.

Christchurch

Those in Christchurch looking to celebrate the arrival of the new year can head along to a free concert at Hagley Park.

The Edge NYE20 event offers a bit of everything for the whole family, including a kids' countdown around 8pm, before a number of home-grown music acts take to the stage later in the night.

The event will be headlined by The Black Seeds, who will take to the stage at 11pm - before the midnight countdown and fireworks display kicks off.

Queenstown

For those further south, a lakefront event in Queenstown is the place to be.

Starting in the afternoon, there will be music, entertainment and food spread out across two stages in Earnslaw Park.

From 2-5pm there will be face painting and roaming entertainers for the kids, before the music starts at 7:30pm, with the line-up including Haven, Calico and Freefall.

DJs such as DJ Pops and DJ Cuz will play the DJ stage from 9pm until 1am, with the fireworks display happening at midnight.
