Watch: Auckland motorcyclist's head-on hit-and-run caught on camera

A south Auckland man said he "could have died" after an oncoming car crossed the centre line and almost knocked him off his bike.

Michael Horsman was riding to work from Karaka in the early hours on Tuesday morning when an oncoming car crossed the yellow line and struck his foot, leg and rear end of his motorcycle.

The 19-year-old was taken to Middlemore Hospital and suffered an ankle sprain, major tissue damage and a hematoma.

"My steel cap boots took the majority of the blow, but don't let that take away from the fact that I could've died there and then," he wrote on Facebook.

Horsman, who allowed Newshub to repost video of the incident he shot on a GoPro, says he was unable to identify the car and registration number "because of the low light conditions and the speech at which the incident happened".

"The only description we had was a silver SUV/4WD, something similar to a Ford Explorer or Nissan Patrol."
