Support service Youthline is urging people to contact and check in with young family and friends ahead of the holiday season.
On Thursday, Youthline chief executive Shae Ronald said they were seeing the effects of COVID-19 and the stress of the holiday season having an impact on young people.
"It's up to all of us to ensure we reach out and support the young people in our lives during this time."
Ronald said in a statement 2020 had been tough for all New Zealanders but had been felt disproportionately by young people.
"That's why we are encouraging everyone to proactively reach out to the young people in their lives to let them know they're there to support them."
She said support is available to any young person who needs it.
Ronald said Youthline's helpline - phone 0800 376 633 or free text 234 - is available 24/7 throughout the holiday period.
Earlier this year, Ronald revealed there had been a "massive" surge in calls for help during New Zealand's COVID-19 lockdowns.
