Police are appealing for information after a woman was harassed by a man making sexual comments towards her at a popular North Shore walking track.

The woman explained on Facebook she was approached by the man in a secluded area of the Long Bay to Okura Rover Coastal Track.

She said the blonde-haired caucasian man, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, made sexually explicit comments towards her and only left after another person appeared on the track.

In a statement provided to Newshub, Waitematā East area commander Insp Simon Walker said police attended the report at about 4pm on Tuesday and spoke with the woman.

Walker said the man has not yet been located and police are asking anyone who may have been approached by him or who has witnessed similar behaviour contact them immediately.

"In general, we advise people out exercising that it is safer to do so with another person or group.

"Always carry a phone with you and tell someone where you're going and how long you expect to be."
