Gisborne Airport has been evacuated after a report of a threat.

Police say the airport was evacuated as a precaution and they are trying to establish the circumstances.

One woman who was meant to be getting onto a flight said she and everyone else in the airport were evacuated and all flights in and out of the eastern city have been stopped.

She said people were moved to an assembly point close to the airport and haven't received any information about the evacuation from police.

Popular music festival Rhythm and Vines ended outside of Gisborne on Thursday night.

Several Air New Zealand Flights have been delayed by between two and three hours.

"It looks like there could be disruptions to flights into and out of Gisborne Airport for several hours," the airport wrote on Facebook.
