A sixth helicopter has been called in to tackle a massive bushfire in the Far North.

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) were first alerted of the incident at Rawene Road, Northland around 3pm this afternoon.

A FENZ spokesperson told Newshub it has burnt through 10 hectares of land but it is now contained.

"There are six choppers working until dark," the spokesperson said.

The blaze has caused the closure of Rawene Road, which is the access route to the ferry between Rawene and Kohukohu.

Motorists have been warned to avoid the area if possible and come up with an alternative route.
