Eighteen fire crews and four helicopters are still battling a large scrub fire at Pines Beach, north of Christchurch.

The fire near Kaiapoi has reached 20 hectares in size, and is still not contained, a Fire and Emergency (FENZ) spokesperson said.

Firefighters are also protecting houses threatened by the fire, where residents have been evacuated.

"Fire crews and helicopters will continue fighting the fire as long as they can this evening.

"Crews will remain at the fire overnight."

Fire crews and helicopters have contained another scrub fire in Christchurch's Redcliffs, which erupted earlier this afternoon.

Emergency services were made aware of the blaze near Glenstrae Road in Redcliffs around 1:40pm on Monday.

A FENZ spokesperson has asked people to be extra vigilant and avoid lighting fires over the next few days, as a heatwave is set to blast the country.

"Put off lighting any fires in the open if you are in a prohibited fire season and ensure braziers, pizza ovens and charcoal fires are supervised and completely extinguished," they said.

"We are asking builders and contractors to take extra care using power tools that might cause sparks in the open air."
