A woman has been taken into custody after fleeing police in the Auckland suburb of Ponsonby.

A police spokesperson told Newshub the chase began at around 1:20pm on Wednesday.

"At around 1:15pm, police attempted to pull over a suspicious vehicle on Hobson Street. The vehicle failed to stop and no pursuit was initiated."

A few minutes later, police were notified of a vehicle which had crashed into parked cars at the intersection of Ponsonby Road and Vermont Road.

The vehicle was identified as the same car which failed to stop earlier.

"Police deployed to the crash scene and through area enquiries, the woman was located on Islington Street," a spokesperson told Newshub.

A witness told Newshub they believed they heard a helicopter not long after, but couldn't see as they were driving.
