Police name two people who died after travelling wrong way down Wellington Motorway

Police have named the two people who died after a crash on the Wellington Urban Motorway on Tuesday morning.

They were 76-year-old Lisale Foaese and 41-year-old George Foaese, both from Wellington.

Their car turned right onto State Highway 2 at Cornish St near Petone, according to police, and the vehicle travelled down the motorway the wrong way for about 10 kilometres.

They hit another car that also had two people inside, and both of these people were rushed to Wellington Regional Hospital in critical condition.

A witness to the crash told Newshub he flashed his headlights at the car to alert it.

"I just saw the car headlights, just two headlights coming towards me," Phillip Vaaitoa said.

He said it easily could have been him who died.

"When you've got a loving family, wife, and three kids, I probably wouldn't be seeing them today," he said.

Police say enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
