Wellington Hospital is dealing with "significant" water damage following a blaze overnight.

Fire and Emergency crews rushed to the hospital at 2am on Thursday after an electrical fault caused a fire.

Joy Farley, the hospital's director of provider services, told Newshub the flames were "largely extinguished" due to the sprinkler systems - but as a result all levels of the hospital have been water damaged.

Farley says four patients have been moved due to the leaks, and the hospital's lifts have been impacted - but other services are expected to continue as usual.

A specialist fire investigation is underway to determine exactly how the blaze broke out, and a team of people are remaining on site over the next 24 hours to assess the impact of the water damage.
