A wastewater pipe has burst in Wellington CBD and locals have been warned to stay out of Whairepo Lagoon.

Wellington Water reported the burst pipe was at the intersection of Victoria Street and Mercer Street in Wellington CBD.

"As a result, wastewater is leaking onto the road making way to the Harris Street Culvert near the Whairepo lagoon," it tweeted around midday Monday.

Repairs are now underway, but locals have been urged to stay away from the area if possible.

"There is no indication wastewater entered Wellington Harbour, but please stay out of Whairepo Lagoon."
