Wellington City Council is investigating after a glorified garden shed was advertised as a rental property for nearly $400 per week.

The property - a garden shed and shipping container haphazardly joined together - was posted on TradeMe for $390 a week.

It was reposted on Twitter by Wellington woman Jenna Gotlieb.

"BRB going to CRY about the Wellington rental market," she wrote. "Where do landlords find the audacity!"

Comments on the tweet described the property as "distressing", "horrid" and "ridiculous".

One person got the council involved, tagging them in the post.

"How is this legal? Please investigate."

A Wellington City Council spokesperson told Newshub they do intend to investigate as soon as possible.

"We'll go and have a look and see whether the building has any sort of consents and, more importantly, whether it is safe or otherwise," they said,

If the building is found to be seriously amiss, steps can be taken to stop anyone residing in it.
