A response team is working hard to free 28 pilot whales which have beached for a second time at Golden Bay.

A team of around 50 people are attempting to refloat the whales at Farewell Spit for the second day.

On Monday, at least 49 whales were stranded. Nine sadly died, but 41 were refloated.

On Tuesday morning, whale protection group Project Jonah said 28 whales had beached again after surviving the night.

"A response team of 50 people are currently working with the whales, refloating them on the 8am high tide," he said.
