Emergency services are battling a raging bushfire on the West Coast of the South Island.

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) confirmed firefighters were called at 5:45pm on Saturday to Okarito, near Franz Josef Glacier.

One aerial appliance and a FENZ crew have resumed efforts to extinguish the blaze on Sunday morning.

Officials were unable to establish the size of the fire.

"Angry, frustrated and sad to see this fire in Okarito," one Okarito local shared to Facebook.

"Some sensitive areas are either burnt or under threat."
