Traffic is starting to build on motorways to Auckland as travellers head home from the long weekend.

The Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency traffic dashboard showed that as of 4:45pm on Monday, there were delays of between 25 and 50 percent compared to normal levels on motorways within Auckland.

Bombay to the city via SH1, SH20, and SH16 is taking about 48 minutes to travel, compared to the regular 35 minutes.

There are slight delays between Helensville and the city. Travelling this route via SH16 is taking about 42 minutes, and via SH18 and SH1 it is taking about 48 minutes.

There are also delays on SH1 north of Auckland. Travelling from Wellsford to Silverdale is taking motorists about 53 minutes, which is a delay of more than 50 percent.

But the most significant delay motorists are facing travelling to Auckland is from Rotorua to Manukau via Hamilton.

It is currently taking four hours and 50 minutes to travel the distance that usually takes about two-and-a-half hours.

The areas of road where traffic is heaviest on this route are between SH5 Tirau to SH1 Tirau, Hamilton to SH1 Taupiri, and SH2 Pokeno to SH1 Drury.
