An Auckland Prison inmate has been rushed to hospital after allegedly being assaulted.

Police were called to the facility just before 11:30am on Tuesday and are investigating the incident.

Auckland Prison's prison director David Pattinson says staff intervened in the incident and "secured the alleged perpetrators". First-aid was also given to the victim before they were taken by ambulance to hospital in a critical condition.

"Corrections will also carry out a full investigation, and will ensure all evidence, including CCTV footage, is provided to Police," Pattinson said.

"Violence in prison is not tolerated and anyone who resorts to this behaviour will be held to account, including facing criminal charges."
