Two people have been arrested near Napier after a wild escape from rural burglary led to the occupants of a stolen vehicle hurling glass bottles at police as they attempted to stop them.

Police say the incident began at around 10am on Saturday after they received reports of a burglary at a property on SH2 near Kotemaori, a rural community in Hawke's Bay.

The alleged offenders then fled the scene in a vehicle stolen from the address.

Police spotted the vehicle on SH2 in Tutira around 11am and attempted to stop it with spikes near Whirinaki.

But the vehicle escaped, fleeing to Napier while the occupants hurled several glass bottles out at police.

The vehicle was finally stopped on Prebensen Dr around 11:35am after police successfully deployed tyre spikes near Napier.

Police say a man and woman have been taken into custody and police are speaking to them in relation to the burglary this morning "and a number of other matters".

A police vehicle was damaged by the offending vehicle as it was stopped, however no one was injured during the incident.

Work has been done along SH2 to Prebensen Dr to clear the road of glass and debris.

Police would like to thank members of the public for their understanding and patience with any delays.
