Earthquake: 5.3 magnitude shake hits Whakatāne, felt in Wellington, Auckland

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake has rocked the North Island.

The quake hit at 7:15am on Tuesday 25km west of Whakatāne at a depth of 133km, according to GeoNet.

Within minutes of the shake, more than 1000 people had reported feeling it, including some in Wellington and Auckland.

"Anyone else feel that #eqnz in Auckland?" one person tweeted.

"Wee tremor to start to housing announcement day," wrote journalist Jenée Tibshraeny.

"Short and sharp in Akl."

Labour MP Rachel Boyack felt it in Nelson.
