Three people injured after school bus crashes into ditch near Nelson Lakes National Park

Police are at the scene of a school bus that has crashed into a ditch near Nelson Lakes National Park.

Emergency services were called to State Highway 65 near Maruia Saddle Rd and Pea Soup Rd in Shenandoah at 4:20pm on Monday.

A police spokesperson told Newshub initial reports confirm there were eight to 10 people on board but no one was trapped. 

Two people with moderate injuries have been airlifted to Nelson Hospital and one with minor injuries is being taken to Murchison by road ambulance.

Two of the four helicopters called to the scene have been stood down.

A St John spokesperson says five others are on their way to Murchison too in a private vehicle.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says both lanes on SH65 are still blocked.
