Police are searching for a man who allegedly shot at officers in Mount Maunganui on Friday morning.
According to Western Bay of Plenty Area Commander Inspector Clifford Paxton, 31-year-old Aren Curtis was seen by police just before 3am on Friday driving a black Audi in Mount Maunganui. He currently has warrants out for his arrest after failing to appear in court.
"The unit signalled for him to stop the vehicle on Truman Lane in Mount Maunganui however he failed to do so," Paxton said. "Police did not pursue the vehicle however spikes were successfully used and the vehicle came to a stop on Seaspray Drive."
That's when the man got out of the car and fled from police on foot. He then allegedly fired a shot at the officers. Nobody was injured.
"Cordons were initially put in place near Seaspray Drive however they have now been removed. The Eagle helicopter also assisted in the search."
While no one was injured, Paxton says the result could have been very different. He is appealing to the public to contact police if anyone has any information about Curtis' location.
He should not be approached.
"We want to reassure the public that there will be an increased Police presence in the area today as we actively search for Mr Curtis.
"Anyone who can assist is asked to contact Police on 111 and quote event number P045870211.
"Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
