A man who allegedly evaded officers by jumping into the water on Auckland's North Shore and subsequently swimming away has been arrested, but he's not the man police intitially thought he was.

Earlier on Wednesday, police said 53-year-old Sean Broderick, who has several warrants for his arrest, was seen by officers on Wednesday morning near the Greenhithe wharf and jumped into the water before swimming across to Paremoremo.

However, it's since been revealed the man was not Broderick but a 43-year-old patched gang member allegedly breaching his bail.

"He is in custody and charges are likely to follow," a police spokesperson said.

"The arrested man is not the 53-year-old man previously reported. However this man, while now established as not being involved in today's incident, is still wanted to arrest by bolice on active charges."
