Person fighting for life after KiwiRail yard incident in Lower Hutt

A person is in critical condition after a workplace incident in Lower Hutt.

They're believed to have suffered a fall at the KiwiRail yards on Elizabeth St, in the suburb of Moera, near Petone.

Emergency services were notified of the accident just after 10am on Monday.

Wellington Free Ambulance confirmed a team of paramedics was onsite treating the patient. Police were also at the scene.

KiwiRail Group chief executive Greg Miller said the person involved in the incident was a construction contractor working at the Hutt Workshops.

"The injured worker has been taken to hospital and our thoughts are with him," he said.

"Support, including EAP (Employee Assistance Programme), has been provided for contractors and KiwiRail staff. We understand the incident has been referred to WorkSafe, and we will work closely with them."

Worksafe confirmed to Newshub it has been notified of the incident and is making enquiries to establish its next steps.
