Police are investigating after a boy was indecently assaulted on a Wellington train.

Wairarapa police said on Wednesday they want to speak to the people who helped the boy after he was assaulted by an unknown man on the Monday afternoon train.

The incident occurred around 4.45pm on the train between Lower Hutt and Woodside.

"Some concerned members of the public came to the assistance of the boy and intervened," said a police spokesperson in a statement.

The boy was not injured but "understandably shaken" by the assault.

Police are now asking anyone who was on the train and witnessed the incident to come forward, as they believe they could have valuable information to assist with the investigation.

Anyone with any information that can assist is asked to call 105 quoting file number 210308/0834.
