A training exercise in Pauanui later this month will see Search and Rescue teams enter into the yards of local residents - if they let them in.

Police said LandSAR volunteers across the Waikato District would be attending a series of workshops in Pauanui on Saturday March 13 and taking part in a "scenario-based exercise" the following day.

"As part of this, search teams may call into residential houses and seek permission to search the yards and sections in and around the town," police said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The coordinators of the exercise ask for support from the community during this time, however residents should be aware they are able to decline."

The exercise is being coordinated by Waikato Police in conjunction with the  Tairua/Pauanui/Whangamatā LandSAR group.
