A person's body has been found near the Northland town of Kerikeri.
Emergency services found the body after responding to reports of a car fire on Wharau Rd just after 7pm on Tuesday.
A police spokesperson said an investigation is underway.
"Our enquiries into the circumstances of the death are still in the very early stages."
The spokesperson said a post mortem will be carried out as well as a formal identification process.
More information will be provided when it becomes available, police said.
