Christchurch businesses flooded by torrential rain

A short, sharp storm hit Christchurch on Saturday night causing issues for motorists and flooding businesses.

Heavy rain started to fall around 8pm, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Surface flooding hit many parts of the city but the worst-affected area was the seaside village of Sumner.

The fire service brought a digger out to clear the clogged up stormwater system to stop more flooding in the village.

But that came too late for some businesses, like the local dairy.

Owner Natalia Mackay says the whole floor was covered.

"You should have come a bit earlier, we were swimming," she told Newshub.

The community rallied to help.

"Too much water came inside the dairy so we were struggling. The firefighters came to help us, the local people came to help us."

The pizza restaurant next door was also inundated.

Pal Singh from Fire and Slice Woodfired Pizza said the water got everywhere.

"It took over all of the kitchen, the cool room, every single part of the dining area then the dry store."

It's the second time the business has flooded in two years.

The long weekend has made things worse.

"We can't get any professional cleaners until Tuesday cause it's the long weekend."
