An Auckland man's hilarious attempt to escape arrest has been caught on camera and posted on social media.

Two videos were posted to TikTok account @kruzenia, where a man is filmed running away from a police officer while handcuffed before stumbling over just after 3pm on Tuesday.

In a statement, police confirmed the 33-year-old captured in the footage had been charged with escaping police custody and being in possession of a Class B drug.

Police say they were speaking to the driver of a stationary vehicle on Whitaker Place in Auckland's CBD, where it was established he was wanted in connection with dishonesty offending matters.

The man was placed under arrest but attempted to remove a jar of drugs from his pants and throw it away. The officer then placed the man in handcuffs, but an acquaintance intervened.

During this confrontation, the handcuffed man ran away from the officer for a few seconds before stumbling and falling flat on his face.

The man was taken to hospital after suffering minor injuries from the fall, and further staff were called to the scene.

Police later found the jar and say it allegedly contained a quantity of the drug GBL.

The man was taken into custody and is awaiting an appearance at the Auckland District Court.
