Coronavirus: No new COVID-19 cases in NZ as more Auckland Airport worker contacts test negative

No new cases of coronavirus were detected in the community nor in managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilites on Friday, the Ministry of Health has announced.

And in more good news for health officials, another seven close contacts of the Auckland Airport worker case tested negative, allaying fears of a COVID-19 outbreak.

The worker, who cleans planes from both red and green zone countries, was revealed to have contracted coronavirus - likely from a recent returnee from Ethiopia - on Tuesday.

The infection sparked concerns of community spread, but the Ministry of Health on Friday revealed 21 of the cleaner's 36 household and close contacts have now tested negative. The remaining 15 are self-isolating and awaiting their results.

"Public health officials are in daily communication with all contacts to monitor their health and confirm any upcoming testing dates," a ministry statement reads.

Meanwhile 48 cases recovered on Friday, with several large groups of recovered returnees being released from Auckland quarantine facility the Jet Park Hotel over the past week.

"These include some of the 64 cases in managed isolation reported during the week ending April 11," the ministry said.

As a result, the number of active cases in New Zealand has dropped dramatically from 80 to 32. The total number of confirmed cases remains at 2244.

Another 4749 tests were processed on Thursday, with the seven-day rolling average now sitting at 4103 tests.
