Easter road toll: Sixth person dies after crash involving car and power pole on Kāpiti Coast

A person has died after a crash involving a car and a power pole on the Kāpiti Coast, bringing the Easter road toll to six.

The crash happened just after 9:30pm on Saturday, on Tasman Rd in Ōtaki.

Police said the only person in the car was taken to hospital in a crticial condition but has since died of their injuries.

"The serious crash unit has been advised," a police statement said. "An investigation is underway into the circumstances of the crash."

There have now been six fatal crashes on the North Island this Easter weekend. Two people were killed in separate crashes in the Waikato region on Thursday night, and one person died in a fiery crash north of Taupō on Good Friday. 

The Easter weekend road toll rose to four on Saturday morning after a second fatal crash in the Bay of Plenty. 

A person died after a crash involving a bus and a pedestrian in central Wellington just before 10pm on Saturday. 

Last year there were no deaths on the roads during the Easter period last year. The official Easter period began at 4pm on Thursday and ends at 6am on Tuesday.
