Magnitude 3.2 earthquake strikes near Christchurch

A magnitude 3.2 earthquake has struck southeast of Christchurch, causing "light" shaking, GeoNet says.

The quake hit at 5:52pm on Monday at a depth of 8 kilometres.

Over 2000 reported to GeoNet that they felt the quake. The majority say it felt weak to light, with a handful saying it was moderate.

Social media users were quick to report the earthquake online.

"Felt like a truck rolling past. Haven't felt one in awhile," one person says.

"The noise of that scared me more than anything," another says.

"That one snuck up alright, hefty jolt," a third says.
