Wellington police are trying to piece together the "timeline of events" which culminated in the suspected murder of a woman in a Mt Cook apartment block.

The woman's body was found in the Wellington City Council-funded apartments on Brooklyn Rd on Saturday evening - a 42-year-old man was taken into custody the same evening and charged with her murder.

Now, police are asking the public for sightings of a man aged between 30 and 40, dressed in a black t-shirt, black trousers and a beanie.

"We believe this man was on foot by himself between 6pm on 24 April and 12.30am on 25 April.

He has moved between The Terrace and the Glenmore Street/Upland Rd area in Kelburn during this time."

As part of the investigation, police are asking Wellingtonians to check their dashcam footage or CCTV to see if they captured any video of the man during this time period.
