Police officers forced their way into a Christchurch bar to obtain CCTV footage following a serious assault last week, it has been confirmed.

The early morning assault on three men outside Cruz bar last Sunday, on Victoria St in the CBD, appeared to be an unprovoked attack by about 10 people - with police saying one 25-year-old victim suffered serious injuries. Stuff reports that he was seriously brain damaged.

A police spokesman confirmed to Newshub that after a conversation with the bar's owner last week, officers broke into the venue with a search warrant to view CCTV footage.

Police did not confirm why officers had to break in to get the footage.

Last week, police issued an appeal for any witnesses to the assault to come forward.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area from 2am until 4am on Sunday, March 21," police said in a statement.

Anyone who might be able to assist is urged to contact police on 105, quoting file number 210321/2258.
