Two police officers were injured after being assaulted with a baseball bat during a routine traffic stop in Hamilton.

Police stopped a car in the suburb of Fairfield just after midnight on Monday and were speaking with the driver before he allegedly brought out the bat.

Hamilton City area commander Insp Andrea McBeth said a 17-year-old male was arrested and will appear in the Youth Court.

"Both police officers were taken to Waikato Hospital in moderate condition," McBeth said in a statement.

The police officers involved in the incident were being supported, she said.
