Police release behind the scenes footage of illegal dirt bike bust in Auckland

Police have released a behind the scenes video of a large-scale bust on illegal dirt bikes in Auckland.

On Saturday, around 60 motorbikes cruised east Auckland's Tamaki Dr, pulling stunts and doing burnouts. Police were aware of the planned ride, and were prepared to interrupt it.

A video posted on Facebook by police showed the public what goes into an operation of that magnitude.

Senior Sergeant Jono Chappell said police were aware of past rides which had caused frustration on the roads, allowing them to prepare for Saturday's operation ahead of time.

"We have an operation in place and plan to disrupt the group's activities and prevent them from causing mayhem on our roads."

As police cars and vans roll onto the street, Snr Sgt Chappel says CCTV and surveillance from the overhead police Eagle helicopter had informed police of the bikers' whereabouts.

"Some have gathered south of our location, with another group congregating in our anticipated spot."

The video then cuts to police arresting some of the riders, and images of the bikes that were seized.

As a result of the operation, six people were arrested and 10 bikes were impounded.

"We don't tolerate offending on our roads," said Inspector Kay Lane in a statement. "We will continue to monitor group bike rides and offending on the roads will be investigated and follow-up action taken."
