Police release photo of 'person of interest' in Sofitel Auckland gang shooting investigation

Police have released an image of a 'person of interest' following a gang-related shooting at a luxury hotel in Auckland's Viaduct Harbour last week.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called to the Sofitel on the waterfront just after 9am last Thursday, following reports a firearm had been discharged - though no one was injured in the incident.

It later emerged the shooting was related to a flurry of violence between members of the Head Hunters and Mongols gangs.

Detective Inspector John Sutton says police need the public's help in identifying a person of interest, who they have released a photo of.

The man in the image appears to have very short hair and be of a large build. He wears a black hoodie, black trousers and red sneakers.

"This person should be considered dangerous and should not be approached," says Det Insp Sutton.

Police say since the incident last Thursday, a team of detectives from across Auckland have "worked tirelessly to identify those responsible".

Anyone with information on this person that may assist police enquiries is urged to contact 09 477 5221 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Following last week's shooting, police said they had tracked down three people for questioning. One was located at the hotel and another two were located at a property in Ōrākei.

Ōrākei Marae was placed into lockdown in response, and part of Tamaki Dr and Kitemoana St were blocked off to motorists and pedestrians.
