A baby has died at a central Wellington emergency housing provider on Wednesday.

Wellington City Missioner Murray Edridge said a mother contacted his staff with concerns about her baby's health.

"Staff contacted emergency services and did what they could to try to resuscitate the baby," he told Newshub.

He said unfortunately the baby was "not able to be resuscitated".

Edridge said he understands the baby's mother is an emergency housing resident on Manners Street.

He said he is unsure why the woman contacted the Mission instead of emergency services.

Police were seen interviewing people at the housing complex earlier in the day.

A police spokesperson told Newshub they were called to a sudden death this morning.

"Police attended following a report of a sudden death at a Manners Street address at 9:40am today.

"There is no indication of suspicious circumstances at this time. "
