A driver who crashed into a row of cars outside a Hastings fast food restaurant has been charged for assaulting drivers, and then police at the scene.

Police were called to reports of a collision on Heretaunga Street West, near KFC Hastings at 12:45pm on Tuesday.

The 60-year-old man allegedly crashed into three parked cars, blocking a row of cars, before getting out and having a physical altercation with another driver.

"Almost crashed into me and my partner at a roundabout then watched him swerve into poles and hit other cars," a Napier resident posted on Facebook.

The other driver knocked him onto the ground before driving off. But the man got up as soon as police arrived and attempted to start another brawl.

Footage posted on Facebook shows police tasering the man before taking him into custody.

Police say the man has been charged for common assault and assault on police. They will also be making enquiries to all those involved.

The 60-year-old is due to appear at the Hastings District Court on April 23.
