A disabled man was assaulted and robbed in Whangārei in what police are calling a "cowardly" attack.

The man was on a mobility scooter, riding on the cyclepath at the intersection of Jack Street and Miro Street in Otangarei when two men holding planks of wood assaulted him.

The man who was assaulted is unable to verbally communicate, so couldn't cry for help. He was knocked unconscious by the offenders, who also stole money from his wallet.

Eventually, he made it home and texted for an ambulance to take him to hospital.

Police are searching for the two alleged offenders and say they are "teenagers of Māori ethnicity, one of whom was taller and slimmer in build than the other".

One of the men has a distinctive ginger stripe down the middle of his hair.

Police say they want to hear from anyone who witnessed the attack, or anyone who has further information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 105, quoting file 210426/9966 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
