An Auckland primary school has been evacuated following reports of a person acting suspiciously at the entrance of nearby Whenuapai Air Base.
Police told Newshub they received reports of suspicious behaviour shortly after 1pm on Friday and made the decision to evacuate Whenuapai School as a precautionary measure, due to its proximity to the airbase.
"One person has been taken into custody without incident and is being spoken to by police," a spokesperson confirmed.
Cordons have been set up around the vehicle the suspicious person was travelling in and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal team are attending the base, police said.
Police are working with NZDF staff to escort students to a nearby pickup area.
The Whenuapai Air Base is a Royal New Zealand Air Force base located near the Waitematā Harbour. It's the Air Force's largest operational airbase.
