Man arrested after armed offenders squad swarm town north of Dunedin

Police have arrested a man after an incident on the West Coast overnight.

The armed offenders squad swarmed a street in Waitati, north of Dunedin, on Tuesday in relation to a 59-year-old wanted on family harm and firearms offences in Greymouth.

It was earlier reported by the Otago Daily Times that police believed the man could be heading for Waitati and that he was dangerous and shouldn't be approached. The armed offenders squad closed off a street in Waitati and was going door to door.

On Tuesday afternoon, police confirmed the man had been arrested "without incident" in Cromwell just before 1:30pm. He will appear in court in due course.

"The Armed Offenders Squad earlier made enquiries at a Waitati address in relation to the same incident."

The Otago Daily Times reports police cordoned off the entrance to Harvey St in Waitati but cordons have since been lifted. The paper said police at the time wouldn't confirm it was connected to the search for the man.

A witness told the paper there were "about nine" armed officers going from house to house on the street. Officers were also searching Blueskin Nurseries, which is on the same street.
