The Hamilton City Council's main building has reopened after being evacuated due to a bomb threat.

Police are undertaking a "thorough check", the council said on its website early on Friday.

"At this stage, it's considered a low-level threat."

The building is on Anglesea St in the CBD, overlooking Civic Square and the Centreplace mall. It reopened at midday after a bomb-detector dog failed to find anything.

"Our staff will be working from home, where possible," Jen Baird, general manager growth said.
