Canterbury 90-year-old proves age is no barrier by going back to university

A 90-year-old Cantabrian has proven age is no barrier by going back to university.

You'd be forgiven for expecting to find most 90-year-olds spending their days enjoying their retirement - in the garden, maybe on a bowling green but not Francesca Howard.

Howard has gone back to the University of Canterbury despite most of her fellow students being 70 years younger than her.

"I'm studying sports coaching for a graduate certificate if I pass anything," she said.

"They [other students] probably all think of me as a grandmother, they don't have time to chat, they're always running off to classes so I've only got to know a few of them."

Senior Canterbury University lecturer Glenn Fyall told Newshub it is the first time he has had a 90-year-old in his class.

"I never thought I would either, but I'd have more now that I've experienced Francesca," he said.

When Howard was asked how people react when they find out she has come back to university at age 90, she responded "They think I'm mad, I'm sure...they really do."

This is Howard's second stint after earning a Bachelor of Arts two decades ago.

Turning to education this late in life,  you could say she's making up for lost time.

"Just fun joining in, I never went to school in my childhood, we just had a tutor who taught us lessons," Howard said.

Howard has a history of teaching too.

She's an equestrian coach and witnessed the first meeting of one of our most famous Olympic partnerships.

Sir Mark Todd and a horse she had trained - Charisma.

"He couldn't believe he was such a brilliant horse because he wasn't very big and Mark's legs were 6 feet and the rest is history."

Among her 90 years worth of achievements, Howard's written several books and invented an equestrian device called Telerein.

The device measures the pressure applied by the horse's reins.

She hopes to be able to hang a new qualification in her country home by the end of the year.

Howard won't be putting the books down for a while yet.
