A car exploding into flames outside an east Auckland shopping mall has been caught on camera.

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) were called to the blaze outside Botany Town Centre at 3:17pm on Friday.

The footage captured smoke issuing from the silver vehicle, which was parked outside ANZ Bank. The car then burst into bright orange flames, according to a witness.

"The fire started small and the security had tried to put it out, but just moments later it burst into flames," Andre Van Der Merwe told the New Zealand Herald.

Van Der Merwe said the owners of the car stood outside with their two young children, clearly in shock.

"It's just fortunate that no one was hurt," he said.

FENZ told Newshub the fire was "well alight" when the crew arrived.

No one was injured and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

It is currently known what caused the car to burst into flames.
