A prolific Christchurch conman has failed to appear in court on new charges because he's fled New Zealand.

Wayne Eaglesome was imprisoned for two years and three months in 2018 for running a business despite being banned from being a director, Stuff reported.

He was let out of prison last year under release conditions but in April was charged with breaching those conditions. However, he's yet to appear in court on those charges.

A police spokesperson confirmed to Newshub on Sunday Eaglesome has left New Zealand and "not returned to date".

Eaglesome was first convicted in 1993, when he was 17-years-old, on charges related to fraud and theft, according to Stuff. He was jailed later in 1993 after committing further offences.

He's also previously been charged for impersonating a priest and pretending to be an English doctor.

Stuff said it's been in contact with two people who claimed to have seen Eaglesome. One told the publication they thought they spotted him at a Thailand cafe, and another believed they sighted him in Malaysia.
