COVID-19: No new cases in the community, six in managed isolation

Six new arrivals have tested positive for COVID-19 at the border in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

No evidence of the virus has been detected in the community.

Of the six new imported cases, the first arrived from India via Qatar on May 14. They are a contact of an existing case and tested positive on day three of their stay.

The second and third cases arrived on May 14 and 15 from Qatar and returned positive results due to routine testing on day three and day two.

The latter three arrived on May 17 and travelled from Bahrain, Turkey and the Maldives respectively, via the UAE. All three tested positive on arrival.

All six individuals are quarantining in Auckland.

A recent returnee who was reported as a historical case on Sunday has now been reclassified as not a case, a spokesperson for the ministry confirmed.

There are currently 25 active cases in New Zealand. To date, the country has recorded 2302 cases of COVID-19.

Since January 1, 2021, 486 people have tested positive for the virus in New Zealand. Of those, 60 have been classified as historical infections, meaning they were not infectious at the time of their positive result. Historical cases are recovered at the time of their test, but viral matter can still be picked up by the swab.

Wellington wastewater

On Sunday, it was revealed that samples collected from Wellington's wastewater had returned weak positive results for COVID-19 on two consecutive days. Further samples were taken on the weekend and the results are expected on Wednesday afternoon, the ministry said.
