Four new arrivals have tested positive for COVID-19 at the border, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.

There remains no evidence of the virus in the community, with New Zealand maintaining it's long streak without locally acquired cases.

The new imported cases are all recent returnees who returned positive results after routine testing on arrival in the country.

The four people travelled together in a group from India, transiting in Qatar, and arrived in New Zealand on Saturday, May 22.

They are are all now quarantining in Auckland.

Two previously reported cases have recovered in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's active case total to 24. To date, New Zealand has recorded 2311 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Additionally, seven previously reported cases have been reclassified as historical infections. As a result, all seven are no longer counted as active cases, and five will not be recorded in the national tally as the infections were first recorded overseas.

Historical cases of COVID-19 are no longer considered contagious at the time of their test. Nasal swabs can sometimes pick up residual traces of the virus, leading to a false positive.

Since January 1, 2021, 495 cases of the virus have been detected in New Zealand, 63 of which have been classified as historical.

Two 'likely' cases in Melbourne

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health said the department is aware of two probable cases in Melbourne's northern suburbs.

"The ministry is aware of reports of two likely positive cases in Melbourne and will be working with our counterparts in Australia. We expect to be able to provide a further update later today," they said.

The two individuals are undergoing urgent retesting to determine if they are indeed positive cases. Victoria's Department of Health understands the two people are connected.

It follows the detection of COVID-19 fragments in wastewater samples surrounding Epping and Wollert, both northern suburbs, last week.
